Deaf Awareness Workshop

Audience: This training is adaptable and appropriate for all professionals serving Deaf and hearing impaired persons in various venues (nursing/retirement homes, mental health clinics, hospitals, Senior Centers, Councils on Aging, banks, insurance agencies, etc.)

Description of training: The associate/presenter* will modify the training for the unique needs of the facility and/or professionals. The associate will explore the social stigma connected with Deafness and debunk the “myths & misconceptions” surrounding this disability. Starting with definitions of hearing impairments, explaining when/how interpreters should be used, introducing new technology available for hearing impaired persons, and ending with communication hints, the audience is encouraged to actively participate in the presentation to insure their questions are answered.

Tips on communication and problem-solving issues in various settings allow professionals in different settings to figure out techniques that work well for staff and patients/residents/customers in their particular venues. For example, use & care of hearing aids, cochlear implants, and other assistive living and visual alerting devices are areas that could be addressed for residential facilities while how to best communicate with Deaf and hard of hearing customers in a retail/business setting could be another workshop topic.

Training format: After an initial consultation meeting, Jan Caswell Associates will evaluate the specific needs of the organization and propose a training format that will be chosen from one of the following: seminar, workshop, or retreat. Each format will focus on the unique topics to be addressed, the number and type of participants, the kind of facility, and the depth of training requested.

Seminar: Presentation to a group interested in specific topic
Workshop: Two, four or six hour interactive session on specific topic for staff training
Retreat: Three to five day total immersion program to learn ASL or other relevant topic

Learning objectives adapted to each format:
• To identify some signs of hearing loss among infants & older individuals.
• To understand the facts of hearing impairments.
• To learn about hearing aids, cochlear implants & current technology.
• To learn appropriate communication techniques in whatever method needed.
• To develop communication techniques between hearing & deaf persons.

*Jan Caswell Associates will match presenters with their area of expertise, i.e. an audiologist would present on use & care of hearing instruments, reading audiograms, etc., while a sign language interpreter might present on “how to” use an interpreter and a Deaf presenter might concentrate on “living in a hearing world”.
